Dr. Bruno Porro
Bruno Porro was a member of the Executive Board of Swiss Re, the world’s largest professional reinsurance company. During his 27 years with Swiss Re Mr. Porro focused on various aspects of risk and capital management. He began his career at Swiss Re as an earthquake modelling specialist and established a group focussing on the assessment of natural hazards. He later assumed responsibility for internal group catastrophe management and hedging through external retrocession purchases. Beyond his risk management focus Mr. Porro also had responsibility for client marketing and underwriting in certain western European and Latin American non-life insurance markets. As a member of the Executive Board, Mr. Porro was responsible for Reinsurance Product Management, Actuarial Services, Economic Research and Non-Life Reserving. During his tenure as member of the Executive Board from 1995 to 2005 Mr. Porro’s principal activity was the establishment and implementation of an integrated risk management within the Swiss Re Group which culminated in his appointment as the Group’s first Chief Risk Officer from 2001 until his retirement in 2005.
Mr. Porro has been an active promoter and supporter of improved standards for risk management and solvency regulation within the insurance and reinsurance industry. This is evidenced by his involvement in the creation of the CRO Forum, a professional risk management group of major European Insurance Groups and Financial Conglomerates focussing on the development and promotion of industry best practice in risk management.
Since his retirement Mr. Porro has served as Chairman of the CRO Networks of the Geneva Association, coordinating the activities of the CRO Forum with a broader audience of insurance industry CROs through the organization of various events to promote the understanding of Risk Management in insurance and the role of the CRO. Since January 2009 he is a member of the newly created Swiss Financial Market Authority FINMA, which supervises the activities of financial undertakings in Switzerland.
Mr. Porro has a degree in civil engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and obtained a doctorate in economics.
